9th of May is Europe Day. Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration, which is considered the birth of the European Union. In his speech of May 9th 1950, the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) whose members would pool their coal and steel production in order to make further wars materially impossible and to develop common economic interests. The first members of the ECSC were France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The first step towards a united Europe had been taken.
